A Liverpool cabbie may never drive again after a passenger launched a horrific late-night knife attack.

The 33-year-old was held at knife point through the city streets as the attacker stabbed him repeatedly.

Following the attack, the bleeding victim was thrown out of his private hire cab and left in the road.

The attacker took off in the stolen cab, which was later found abandoned after smashing into a crash barrier in Bankfield Road.

It is understood the Toxteth taxi-driver picked up two men in Wavertree at about midnight on Saturday, who asked to be taken to Widnes.

One of the men got out in Hale Road, with the second man wanting to go to Higher Road, also in Widnes. But as he arrived at his destination and asked to pay the fare, the attacker brandished a knife and proceeded to stab the cabbie incessantly in his left hand.

The victim underwent reconstructive surgery in an attempt to salvage severed nerves and arteries. But the 33-year-old may lose the use of his hand following the vicious attack.

The attacker was described as around 27-years-old, skinny with short black hair. He was wearing a black jacket and jeans and spoke with a Liverpool accent. The victim is recovering in Whiston Hospital. Anyone with information should call police on 0845 458 0000.
