Confused by the solutions?
The information below represents the component parts of available lone worker solutions. Employers should be aware that BS8484 enables some of these relationships to be sub-contracted by your Supplier. If data sensitivity is important to you then you should seek clarification.
1. The Device
- This is the equipment carried by the end user and this can be anything from a work issued Mobile Phone or Smartphone to a dedicated Lone Worker Device.
- Some manufacturers supply devices containing special features such as GPS, man-down/fall detectors and discreet duress features.
- BS8484 outlines some minimum considerations before choosing specialised devices.
2. The Location Platform
- The Location Platform is used to hold location data.
- Data can be ‘pushed’ by the device to the location platform or it can be ‘pulled’ from the device by the platform.
- Critically, this is used to locate the end user device in the event of any incident and provides location information of end users to the responders.
- This can be provided by the Device manufacturer and therefore specifically dedicated to a single device.
- Alternatively this could be a 3rd party solution capable of handling many types of device.
3. The Lone Worker Support Platform
- This is the ‘heart’ of your lone worker solution.
- The Lone Worker Support Platform contains all of your staff (lone worker and emergency contact) personal details plus the associated procedures and risk management policies for handling alarms.
- It is this platform that receives lone worker device communications and establishes if any risks exist.
- This platform initiates the alarms that require a response.
4. The Monitoring Provider
- The monitoring provider receives the lone worker alarm from the Lone Worker Platform.
- The Lone Worker Platform is then used to recover and view your personal details, view your risk scenario and alarm response policy before deciding what the next steps should be.
- The monitoring provider uses the location platform to direct responders.
- BS8484 contains minimum standards applicable for delivery of an effective monitoring service.
5. The Response Provider
- This is the organisation that responds to your lone worker alarms and could be your own organisation, a 3rd party response company contracted by you or your supplier, or the emergency services.
- If you require a guaranteed police response as part of your solution then BS8484 requires that your monitoring provider must operate to BS5979 CATII
6. The Supplier
- This is the company that contract’s with you and supplies your lone worker solution.
- The Supplier may sub-contract any element of your solution and consequently they may have complete control over some or all components of the solution.
